Dieting is never easy. But why are we so attracted to different diets? Marketers of various lose-weight-quick diets have been trapping us into believing the following:
- You can eat all you want.
- Lose weight fast! It’s easy!
- Lose weight without moving a muscle.
- Secret formula reduces your body fat.
- Magic food that burns calories.
In reality, there isn’t such a thing as a magic diet. It is even more dangerous to be trapped in the dieting cycles in which you lose some weight, but gain back more later.
There are probably hundreds of diets out there. It can take a person’s lifetime to try all of them. It makes you wonder if we can have just one diet that will make us lose weight whenever we choose to. The simple truth is that no such diet exists and dieting alone is not a healthy long-term solution for weight management.
However, there is no shortage of new fad diets on the market. The makers of those “magic” diets are more interested in selling false hopes than anything else. When you see a celebrity shrink who can’t even shrink his own waistline out there promoting his apple-shaped body diet and pear-shaped body diet, you it is a scam.
Can you really lose weight on a diet? The good news is that in the short run, the answer may be yes. The bad news is that in the long term, you will likely gain the weight back and dieting alone can make future weight loss much harder. Having a healthy eating plan combined with an active lifestyle appears to be real answer to keeping one’s weight under control.

However, switching to a different diet may not be the right answer. Losing weight is much more about changing lifestyle than cutting calories. Changing lifestyle isn’t easy. But once you see and feel the benefits, there is no going back.
Dieting and Exercise Are Key to Healthy Weight Loss
Many studies have found that most people can lose 5-10% of body weight with just about any diet. The problem is that the lost weight comes back and more after a while. Dieting is not a sustainable way to reach your weight loss goal. Dieting alone has no health benefits for the majority of people. You lose your energy level, fight your urge to eat and get mad when the weight comes back. Some studies even concluded that most people are better off noting going on any diet at all. In the long run, for those who don’t go on a diet, their weight would be pretty much the same. However, their bodies would not suffer the wear and tear from losing weight and gaining it all back.
Dieting only works when combined with exercise and lifestyle changes. In most overweight cases, food isn’t the only culprit. Gaining weight is most likely associated with changes of behavior or one’s personal life. For me, it was the combination of stress, sleep deprivation and overworking. Food often serves as a means that we use to comfort ourselves. If we don’t find the root cause, the pounds taken off by a diet can come back with a vengeance.
