Wake-up Call for Weight Loss

For everyone who had put serious efforts into weight loss, there was the wake-up call that finally turned the thoughts of losign weight into action.

For me, it was not a moment in front of the mirror. My life was so stressful back then that I didn't look at myself that much. It was not a moment when I had to check out a pair of pants with a bigger waistline. It was not a moment when I was trying to catch my breath after only 3 flights of stairs.

The moment came when one day I was checking out my blood pressure at the pharmacy. I was shocked to see how high the reading was. My father has been battling hypertension for most of his adult live because he is overweight. He has been relying on a cocktail of drugs to control his blood pressure. It was always on my mind that I didn't want to live the kind of drug-dependent life. So, the blood pressure reading was the finally warning that finally woke me up.

I am glad it did. What is your wake-up call?

Lose Weight, Save Gas

The widening waistlines of Americans have increased the consumption of gasoline since 1960 according to researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Virginia Commonwealth University.

A report by Laura A. McLay of VCU, concludes that Americans now pump 938 million gallons of fuel more on a yearly basis than they were in 1960 because of their increasing weight.

Overcome Weight Loss Setbacks

  • Take charge. Accept responsibility for your own behavior. Remember that ultimately only you can help yourself lose weight.
  • Be gentle with yourself. Practice self-forgiveness. Don't let negative self-talk — "I've blown it now!" — get in your way of getting back on track with your eating and exercise goals. Try not to think of your slip-up as a catastrophe. Remember that mistakes happen and that each day is a chance to start anew.

Losing weight is a bitch! No other way to put it. It can be extremely frustrating. My experience is that it helps by setting your goal low. In other words, don't think you can drop 30 lbs in 2 months. Be happy if you drop 5 lbs in 2 months and don't forget to give yourself a pat on the back. If you set your goal beyond reach, you will be very disappointed and that can have a huge negative impact on your motivation.

When I started my diet and exercise routine, I had literally no expectations on how quickly I could lose weight. I simply enjoyed exercising and had some fun playing basketball. Dieting was hard, but what can you do? I was amazed my weight was going down a lot faster than I thought. That was a positive reinforcement.

Weight-Loss Drug Fails

A once promising weight-loss drug that produced encouraging results in animal studies has failed to deliver in a real-world trial of humans and will be shelved, the pharmaceutical firm Merck & Co. announced Tuesday.
The drug, known as MK-0557, was designed to focus on a "hunger-stimulating factor," which has long been considered a potential target for anti-obesity therapy. And while the drug was well tolerated by the 832 obese people who finished the trial, they only lost an average of 7.5 pounds during the 12-month study, compared with people taking a placebo who lost an average of 4 pounds.

This is a bad news for Merck, but perhaps good news for people who need to lose weight. Who knows what serious side effects such a drug would have caused in long-term use. If it ends up taking your weight off, but causing serious illnesses, you are much better off losing weight the simple way. If the drug ends up giving someone a terminal illness, it does what it claims and some - it takes all your weight off.
